Salon also has an article, The politics of fuel efficiency, about a new paper published by a Stanford economist that argues that raising CAFE standards does nothing prevent pollution and that a gasoline tax is a far better way to modify both automaker (producer) and the average joe’s (consumer) behavior.  If you can wade through the econo-speak it’s an interesting read.
